About 10%
of the total population of Bangladesh is disabled. Among
them, visual impaired 26%, hearing impaired 27%,
physical disabled 34 %, intellectually disabled
6%, and other 7%. Parents or guardians of
the 22% disabled do not take any initiative or any
treatment for the cure of their disabled family member/s
due to negligence or ignorance
(A study
report on relationship between poverty and disability,
August, 1998, IFB).
Overall
health care consumption in private sector is very low in
comparison with the government sector.Although health
care consumption is more in government sector, it is
mainly focused on clinical treatment rather than
preventive approach. In most of the hospitals/ health
centers of government sector, more emphasis is laid on
curative treatment. The main bulk of health service
delivery in private sector constitute the private clinics
or private hospitals which is inaccessible for most of
the poor people of the country due their inability to
purchase service at a very high rate. A few NGOs are
targeting the underserved and underprivileged rural
population of the country. Impact Foundation Bangladesh
is one of the few NGOs of Bangladesh which through its
hospitals trying to reach the poor rural community of
Bangladesh with tertiary level health care service free
of cost.
Following are the anecdotal story of a few beneficiaries
whose life was changed through the initiatives of IFB.

Mita
after surgery
|
|
Fazlul Haque was a poor farmer. He had a small
piece of land and earned his livelihood by
cultivating on that land.
His only child is his daughter Mita, who was
born with a congenital defect on his lip
medically called " Cleft lip" or incised lip.
The defect gave her an ugly look. Even her
friends from the same neighborhood were
reluctant to play with her because of her ugly
appearance.
|
|
|
|
|
Once
one of Fazlul Haque,s neighbors told him that
such defect can be cured through surgery in
Dhaka and advised him to go to Dhaka for
better treatment. Fazlul made up his mind and
went to Dhaka along with his daughter Mita. He
saw a doctor at a private clinic. The doctor
told him that it can be cured through surgery
and it would cost him TK/- 15000. Upon hearing
the huge cost of surgery he became disappointed
and returned home in despair. He was at the end
of tethers with no reckon of life. Since then
Fazlul Haque was passing his days with a ray of
hope.
One day he came to know from a medicine shop
owner that there is a boat hospital somewhere
where they are correcting this type of defect in
gratis. He collected the mobile number of the
boat hospital named Jibon-Tari from a person in
his neighborhood whose son had club foot surgery
on that boat hospital. He got the location of
Jibon-Tari, which was located at Chamrarghat of
Kisoregonj district. Fazlul haque became upset
again because it is so far, almost 500
kilometers from the place where he lived.
Determined to try again fir his daughter, one
morning he started his journey with his daughter
for Chamrarghat. He arrived at Chamrarghat next
day early morning. He collected a yellow ticket
by standing up in a long queue and saw the
doctor. The on duty doctor of JT examined Mita
and informed her father that she could be cured
through surgery, which would cost him only
Tk.500. His joy knew no bounds. After some tests
he was given a date to come again. The surgery
was performed and stitches were removed after a
week. Fazlul Haque was overjoyed when he saw the
changed face of his beloved daughter. His
daughter Mita turned a new life, the previous
ugliness had disappeared. A large drop of tears
rolls downs his cheeks. He raised his both
hands and prayed to the God:" May these people
find a place in the heaven. |

Kaosar did not become blind overnight. His
vision started deteriorating when he was two
years old. As he was very small, nobody could
detect it at an earlier stage. At the beginning
his father Babul Mia did not give much attention
to it until Kaosar became completely blind in
both eyes. A wave of guilty feelings ran through
him whenever he saw his son.
Babul Mia took his son to an eye surgeon in the
nearest district town. His disease was diagnosed
as Congenital cataract and the doctor told him
that he has to take his son to Dhaka for
cataract surgery with lens implantation on both
eyes. Eye surgeon also told him that no eye
surgeon in a district town has the expertise to
perform cataract surgery on such a small boy.
Babul Miah also came to know from the surgeon
that the surgery would cost him around TK. 20000
(Twenty thousand) in Dhaka. Upon hearing this,
the hell broke loose on him .He returned home
feeling more guilty, frustrated and
disappointed.
Suddenly fate smiled on him and to his utter
surprise he got the opportunity to get his son
cured without any money. One day he went to the
village market and one leaflet pasted on a
building of the market drew his attention. It
was leaflet of "Jibon-Tari" about its
activities. Babul Miah came to know from the
leaflet that cataract surgery is being performed
there free of cost. Next morning Babul Miah
along with his ailing son Kaosar went to the
boat hospital "Jibon-Tari" anchored at
Chamaraghat. He got a pink ticket queuing up
in the registration area and entered the eye
consultation room with his son Kaosar. The Eye
doctor examined his son Kaosar and selected him
for surgery. Kaosar had cataract surgery on both
of his eyes with three months interval in
between.

beloved son Kaosar has been was restored. Babul

Before
Surgery
After Surgery |

Reshmoti is a fourteen years old girl. She was
born with cleft lip and clubfoot in her left
leg. She was frustrated with her ugly facial
look as well as her physical deformity. From her
childhood, neither she could speak without
hesitation nor she could walk and play like the
other girls in her neighborhood. She has brought
misery of social stigmatization silently during
these fourteen years.
Her father Mr. Jamaluddin is a poor farmer
living in Chuadanga. He always had a great
anxiety for his daughter. He met a few doctors
at Chuadanga for treatment of her beloved
daughter. All of them told him the same thing
– “ Yes, it can be cured through an expensive
surgery in Dhaka “. Let alone spending a huge
amount of money for her treatment, he could not
even afford to go to Dhaka. So, he thought that
it is an inevitable consequence and he cannot do
anything for his beloved daughter.
|
|
|
|
|
Once Mr. Jamaluddin was told by a health worker
of IMCHC that such kind of deformity are treated
at Impact’s Chuadanga hospital free of cost.
After a week he went to IMCHC along with his
daughter Reshmoti. The on duty doctor informed
her father that her leg and lip could be cured
through two different surgeries. The first
surgery can be done on her leg and then after
two weeks plastic surgery can be done for her
lip deformity. The cost for each surgery will be
around TK.1000, which is just a nominal fee.
Jamaluddin agreed and doctor gave a date for her
leg surgery.
Reshmoti was admitted at IMCHC on given date,
and operation was done successfully on her left
leg. After six months of surgery, she could
walk and move normally. This surgery relieved
her family of some anxieties. Within six months
of surgery on her leg, the second surgery was
done on her lip by a specialist plastic surgeon
from Dhaka. Stitches were removed seven days
after surgery. Jamaluddin could not believe his
eyes. The ugly appearance of Resmoti has
disappeared and she turned a new leaf.
Now Reshmoti can move around without any
shyness. Jamaluddin gets relief when he thinks
of Reshmoti ‘s bright future. The family of
Reshmoti is very grateful to IMCHC.
