Hydrocephalus is the abnormal enlargement of the brain cavities (ventricles) caused by a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Untreated, hydrocephalus will result in brain damage and subsequently death. Hydrocephalus can be present at birth or triggered by tumors, infection, bleeding in the brain, or due to aging. There is no medical treatment, but hydrocephalus can be treated by surgery.

In Bangladesh, such treatment facility is not commonly available. In Dhaka city, hydrocephalus treatment service is mainly available in few large hospitals.

With support from UK IMPACT Foundation, IFB undertook this special project to help hydrocephalus-affected children in collaboration with a local Neurosurgeon, specially trained in advanced surgical technique ETV, which reduces the post-operative sufferings of the affected children. Under this project, IFB has been able to help more than 50 children with hydrocephalus during the last few years.
